Mount's Bay Pilot Gig Club

Three Rivers

Leaving the Gig Shed at 7am, we headed up the A30 to the traditional Pre-Scillies Three Rivers Race hosted by Caradon Gig Club. Arriving in the bitterest of easterly winds, the boat was swiftly unloaded and on the water.

The ladies took to the water first and endured the 53 minute long race that passes through the River Tamar, Tavy & Lynher. After a “straight” start line, the crews proceeded to race upstream to the River Tavy where they turned three marks before heading back back down stream, passing under the iconic Tamar Bridge arriving at the mouth of the River Lynher. After the final turn, the conditions worsened along the last leg as the strong winds made for some very water. Crossing the line in 3rd place, this is a good result for a pre-season race.

It was then the men’s turn to take the water. After warming up, the crew lined up on the start line alongside Caradon in Essa & Falmouth in Irene Too. After a strong start, the crew settled into 4th place as they rowed upstream to the River Tavy. After completing the turns, the crew headed back down stream and proceeded to overtake Looe into 3rd place. Stretching out, the crew motored down stream towards the leaders Caradon & Falmouth. After completing the turns downstream, the crew also hit choppy conditions, but the water soon flattened out and passed the finish line just before the bridge in 49 minutes.

Overall a well run event, but very cold!
