Newquay County Championships – Ladies

Newquay County Championships – Ladies

Mount’s Bay Pilot Gig Club took part in the Ladies County Pilot Gig Championships on the 2nd and 3rd September, hosted as always by Newquay Rowing Club.
The club entered three crews into this knock-out style competition. The C crew of Graham Nicholas (cox), Teresa Jago, Vanessa Bush, Lauren Tesdale, Lucy Sparrow, Sam Dimmock and Ellie Wheatley made it through to the second round, unfortunately they weren’t fast enough to qualify for the quarter finals, however finished a very credible 35th out of 97 crews and were the 3rd best C crew.
The B crew of Gary Rich (cox), Jess Hutchings, Wendy Wheatley, Julie Ancell, Naomi Watts, Ele Hague and Maxine Millichip, qualified comfortably for the second round. In round 2, they faced strong competition and soon it was clear they had to try and qualify on time. After a hard fought race, unfortunately the crew were disqualified for an incident on one of the turns.
The A crew of Dylan Jane (cox), Charlotte Roberts, Jenny Defriez, Jo Culley, Jade Smith, Kath Hawkins and Lucy Davis had no problems qualifying for the final of 6 crews on the Sunday afternoon. With solid, consistent and focused rowing Mount’s Bay were one of the favourites for a medal. Drawing berth 6 is considered a disadvantage, however this crew made the very best of it, and by the 1st turn of 2, they were in joint 2nd place with Fowey, however lost the advantage on the turn, putting them back into 3rd. On the 2nd leg Mount’s Bay started to pull back onto Fowey, but it just wasn’t quite enough and they finished up as Bronze Medalists, 3 places higher than the World Championships in May, a fantastic result for this crew.
The ladies section now starts their preparation for the Super veterans Championships in October and in two it’s the turn of the men to contest their County Championships, also at Newquay.
