Mixed and Vets County Championships
Over the weekend Mounts Bay Gig Club attended the Mixed and Vets Championship at Saltash. On Saturday the Mixed C Crew made it into the Plate race but unfortunately after some tidy rowing they were disqualified as they were a composite crew and had one member of Caradons club rowing in the bow. The Mounts Bay B Crew also rowed well and made it as far as the Semi Finals. The Mixed A Crew qualified easily for the finals where they competed against Caradon and Falmouth for the top places. Falmouth gradually pulled away from the other boats, leaving Caradon and Mounts Bay to fight it out for the runner up placements. Caradon went into the last leg in second but Mounts Bay with the confidence to keep their stroke strong and steady gradually pulled up on the Saltash crew and crossed the line in second place. The Crew stroked by Charlotte Roberts and Coxed by Gary Rich also included Naomi Watts, Andy Tester, Zack Such, Ryan Watts and Ellisha Jenkin.
On Sunday the Mixed Vets made it into the plate race where they rowed well together and finished in fourth place. The Mens Vets Crew competed well in their heats to make it into the finals where they finished in a well deserved fourth place. The Ladies Vets Crew had dominated in the heats and lined up for the final determined to do well. A good start saw their only competition in the Newquay crew and after dropping down to a steady rate the Mounts Bay Crew pulled away to lead throughout the race. They crossed the line three boat lengths ahead of Newquay and a convincing twenty boat lengths over the next crew. Unfortunately their victory celebrations were cut short when they were informed that they had been disqualified. On the last mark there had been some confusion as a boat had started to moor near the last turn and the Mounts Bay Crew followed by Newquay had passed the boat on the wrong side. Despite the disappointment of this result the results over the weekend as a whole proved that Mounts Bay Gig Club remains one of the top clubs in the County.
