Convincing win for Mounts Bay Ladies Vets
The Mixed and Vets County Championships took place at Saltash last weekend and were efficiently hosted by Caradon Gig Club. The event involved using selected boats from other clubs which made for some interesting rowing and competition.
On Saturday the Mounts Bay B and C mixed crews comfortably made it through to the quarter finals where the C crew finished in fourth place and the B crew in third. As only the first two boats from each race go through to the next round, the competition for both crews was disappointingly ended at this stage.
The A crew comfortably made it through to the final where it would be true to say they were the third club to cross the line. However as Caradons’ A and B crews were first and second, closely followed by Falmouths’ A and B crews, the Mounts Bay crew was finally placed a credible fifth.
On Sunday the Mens’ and Ladies’ veteran crews both comfortably made it through to the finals. In the final the men competed well and despite having problems with the construction of the boat still managed to finish third, a very credible result against some tough competition.
The draws leading up to the finals had meant that the ladies crew had yet to compete against the most competitive crews and so they were ready for a real fight in the final. The start of the first leg against wind and tide saw the Mounts Bay Ladies gradually pull away from the other crews. As none of the other crews responded to this show of powerful rowing the crew went into the first mark three boat lengths ahead of their nearest rival. This lead was extended over the next three legs and resulted in the ladies taking a convincing win seven boat lengths ahead of the next crew. The title of Ladies Vets County Champions was well deserved as the rowers had made time to consolidate rowing as this six as well as training hard in their normal crews.
