Mount's Bay Pilot Gig Club

Mens County Championships – Newquay 18th & 19th September 2010

Mounts Bay Pilot Gig Club took three crews to the County Championships held in Newquay at the weekend. On Saturday the A crew of Neil Harvey, Zack Such, Tony Such, Jamie Metters, Ryan Watts and Andy Tester, coxed by Chris Barrett, qualified with ease to the quarter finals on Sunday. The B crew of Tom Elliott, Martyn Farmer, Aidan Doyle, Logan Anderton, Andy Hope and Colin Campbell coxed by Tim Nicholas rowed superbly in the first round to qualify for the next round. In round 2 the pressure was on, a tough race up the 1st leg saw them go into the first mark in 5th place, however a canny buoy turn saw them come out in 3rd. Unfortunately this was the last race of the championships for them as they failed to qualify for the quarters on time. The C crew of Dan Kingston, Tim Nicholas, Ian Blewett, Ross Long, Russ Salter and David Roberts, rowed very well but unfortunately left the Championships in the first round.

On day two the A crew took to the water once again and really laid down the gauntlet with perfect technique and strong rowing. They qualified comfortably for the final, certainly as one of the favourites. The final, which sees crews going around the course twice proved a very exciting race. Caradon A edged ahead of the pack, comfortable maintaining a lead the entire race, they rowed to victory convincingly. However the race for the other places was exciting, coming out of the first turn, it was all level pegging, a rare sight. Mounts Bay found themselves lying in 4th coming down the last leg, not happy with this they stepped it up and rowed though Falmouth A to take 3rd place. A brilliant result for the the club following on from the ladies 4th place two weeks ago.

The racing crews now take a rest for the first part of the winter, then preparation for the World Championships in May will get under way.
