Members of Mount’s Bay Pilot Gig Club returned this week from a visit to the Lombardy region of Italy after competing in the European Fixed Seat Rowing Championships 2017.
Set in this famously beautiful area of Italy the competition is organised by the Italian Fixed Seat Rowing Federation and is hosted by a different regional club every year. This year it was held at Largo Du Pusiano, a small lake south of Lake Como at the Eupilio Rowing Centre. The crews compete in two different styles of boat called Gozzi and Jole. The ‘Gozzi’ boats resemble our Seine style of British boats, indeed a ladies Teignmouth crew won the best international crew title. The ‘Jole’ boats, which are slightly more reminiscent of our sliding seat coastal boats too were successful for West Country rowers, with Penryn Ladies coming third in the ladies final, clearly making the British contingent the most successful country outside of the host Italian crews.
