On Saturday 6th August Mounts Bay Pilot Gig Club attended the Cadgwith regatta. Mounts Bay fielded a full complement of senior crews in perfect conditions of sunshine and a gentle breeze.
First race of the day was the Ladies A where the crew of Tim Nicholas (cox), Charlotte Roberts, Ellisha Jenkin, Grace Mathews, Naomi Watts, Rebecca Campbell and Tressa Hoskins had a great race in Taran. They held Falmouth, in Black Rock for the first leg, never giving them an inch, however the inside berth on the mark proved advantageous for the Falmouth girls who eventually took the win over Mounts Bay in second.
The Mens A crew of Charlotte Roberts (cox), Andy Hope, Sam Gilman, Dave Elliott, Martyn Farmer, Colin Campbell and Tim Nicholas also had a tough battle on the first leg, however this time having the inside advantage on the first mark and took two boats on the first turn to come out equal 4th. Charlestown just slipped ahead before the last turn, and Mounts Bay finished a very credible 5th against some top crews.
The B races saw Mounts Bay give two new rowers their first races, Rebecca Harvey in the ladies and Rob Abernethy in the mens, a perfect regatta for their first race experience.
In the veterans race Mounts Bay fielded a mens crew which came 2nd to Falmouth and a mixed vets crew who rowed in Hope kindly lent by Newquay. The final race of the day was the mixed race where Mounts Bay achieved first place with a convincing lead.
All in all a really great day for the club.
