Appledore Pilot Gig Club hosted their Annual Supervets Championship (over 50’s) for the third year over the weekend of 14th and 15th October. Mount’s Bay attended for the first time, they entered one crew: cox Charlotte Roberts, Teresa Jago, Vanessa Bush, Sandra Cassidy-Neale, Wendy Wheatley, Ele Hague and Maxine Millichip. Three members of Mount’s Bay collaborated with Zennor Gig Club to form ‘Zen Bay’ for the weekend: cox Andy Thorpe, Zoe Payne, Liz Burnard, Linda Wills, Siobhan McInerney, Philippa Jago-Roach and Lesley Osborne.
The heats took place on the first day, which saw Mount’s Bay progress comfortably to the semi finals and Zen Bay also qualified after a well fought race in their heat.
Day 2 started with the semi-finals. Both Zen Bay and Mount’s Bay were in the first semi-final race. Mount’s Bay soon had a comfortable lead, with the rest of the field being slowed down by having to row over a sand bank, causing some disruption to the race. Zen Bay had to fight hard the whole way around in order to achieve the qualifying spot, unfortunately they just missed out on the final by 3 strokes.
In the final Mount’s Bay were put under pressure from Salcombe early on, a very difficult first turn meant Salcombe gained at least a length on Mount’s Bay. They continued to challenge Mount’s Bay’s lead around the second turn and down the last leg. However the Mount’s Bay crew were resilient to the end and fought them off to win the Championship overall by a comfortable margin.
